Community Involvement
Mpumalanga Mental Health Society was founded in 1994, driven by the rise in the vital services we offer, having been affiliated to national and international organizations such as the South African Federation for Mental Health, and the World Federation for Mental Health.
Since 1994, the Mpumalanga Mental Health Society functions under the auspices of the national body of the South African Federation of Mental Health. This body aims to coordinate, monitor and promote services for persons with Intellectual Disabilities; Psychiatric Disabilities (Mental Illness); and to promote mental well-being.
The South African Federation of Mental Health is affiliated to the African Regional Council for Mental Health (ARCMH) and the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). This ensures that we adhere to accepted international standards and practices.
We are passionate about lobbying for the rights of the disabled, by creating awareness within the community.
Governance
The organization is managed by a dedicated Management Committee, supported by a group of committed Staff Members.
We adhere to all the principles of King III, The Constitution of South Africa, The 8 Millennium Goals and all legal and financial requirements.
Sustainability
Since June 1994, Mpumalanga Mental Health has successfully sustained itself and delivered excellent and vital service to all our deserving beneficiaries and the general public.
In August 2013, monitoring and evaluation were highlighted as integral parts of a welfare organization. This is to ensure that welfare services remain relevant in the dynamic field of social development in South Africa. Mpumalanga Mental Health is no exception to this, and has put mechanisms in place to ensure accountability, and evaluate ongoing service delivery at regular intervals.
These mechanisms include the following:
• Record keeping; Asset registers; Stock control; Financial control measures.
• Monthly management committee meetings; Annual General Meetings.
• Quarterly reports to the Department of Social Development; Audited financial statements.
• Audits by Mpumalanga Mental Health Area Manager; Community involvement and participation; Monthly statistics.
• Annual reports to the NPO Directorate: Department of Social Development.
• Quarterly reports to Donors and Funders.
